Semester 5

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V

Project 1 (Groupwork)

In this group project, we analysed Brickfields’ urban character through macro- and micro-scale townscape appraisal, examining identity, sense of place, spatial structure, and user behaviour. Using mapping, visual and behavioural studies, and SWOT analysis, we identified key urban issues. We then proposed a mini urban intervention to improve walkability, activate underutilised spaces, and strengthen community interaction.

Project 2 (Individual)

This project focuses on designing a community Learning Centre within the urban and heritage context of Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The project integrates townscape analysis, design strategy, and design development, emphasising place-making and community engagement. We need to develop a 3–5 storey building informed by site context, user behaviour, statutory requirements, passive design strategies, structure, and building services to enhance the public realm and social interaction.

BUILDING SERVICES

Project 1 (Groupwork)

This assignment analysed integrated building services systems in a high-rise office building (Menara PERNAS, Bangsar South). We studied mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning, fire protection (active & passive), and vertical transportation, focusing on system layout, component coordination, and statutory compliance. The project strengthened my understanding of service integration, safety requirements, and building performance in complex high-rise environments.

Project 2 (Individual)

This assignment applied comprehensive building services systems to my previous Architectural Design IV project. The study integrated mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning, fire protection, mechanical transportation, electrical supply, water supply, sewerage, and drainage systems into the design. Through detailed drawings and schematics, I demonstrated how services are planned, coordinated, and installed in response to practical, regulatory, and constructability considerations.

ENERGY AND ARCHITECTURE

Project 1 (Groupwork)

This project focuses on energy-efficient and low-energy building design, analysing façade and building systems through theory and real-world case studies. Group work included a precedent analysis video (Packard Foundation HQ) and a site-visit vlog (IOI Damansara), developing skills in building science, performance evaluation, and digital presentation.

Project 2 (Individual)

This assignment involved a walkthrough energy audit of my own home to evaluate energy consumption and identify potential savings. The study analysed façade orientation, climate data, energy load profiles, HVAC and lighting systems, supported by simple field measurements and utility bills. Energy conservation and passive strategies including LED retrofitting, passive cooling and lighting, and improved waste and water management were proposed to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.
