Semester 4

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IV

Project 1A (Groupwork)

For Project 1A, my group focused on the south side of Taman Wawasan Recreational Park, analysing its environment and community needs through site visits, interviews, and SWOT analysis. We proposed context-sensitive and sustainable design strategies for a future Creative and Recreational Hub. This project enhanced my skills in site analysis, teamwork, and designing with community focus.

Project 1B (Groupwork)

For Project 1B, I worked in a smaller team to design a small community structure for the south side of Taman Wawasan Recreational Park, focusing on materiality, human experience, and environmental sustainability. Using insights from our site analysis, we created a design within a 3m x 3m x 6m space that responds to local community needs. I explored sustainable materials, joinery details, and construction methods. This project deepened my understanding of human scale, spatial interaction, and how thoughtful material choices can enhance both function and experience.

Project 1C (Individual)

For Project 1C, I individually designed a Creative and Recreational Hub for the south side of Taman Wawasan Recreational Park, building on prior site analysis and small-scale intervention. The project focused on fostering community through spatial organisation, materiality, and sustainable design strategies. Using a cluster typology, I developed spaces that encourage creativity, wellness, and intergenerational interaction while responding to environmental context. I explored passive strategies, detailing, and spatial poetics to enhance user experience. This project refined my ability to integrate technical, social, and environmental considerations into a comprehensive architectural proposal.

GREEN STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING DESIGN

Project 1 (Groupwork)

For Assignment 1, my group and I studied the St. Diamond Building in Putrajaya (tropical) and the Bullitt Center in Seattle (temperate oceanic), focusing on passive design strategies specifically site planning, daylighting, facade design, natural ventilation and strategic landscaping. From this, I learned how different climates require distinct passive approaches to achieve energy efficiency and comfort without heavy reliance on mechanical systems.

Project 2 (Individual)

For Assignment 2, I integrated passive green building strategies into my final architectural project using insights from Assignment 1 and the case studies. I employed strategies such as site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, and strategic landscaping to optimise comfort and energy efficiency. I analysed the site context, climate, and cultural aspects to shape responsive, sustainable solutions, ensuring my design enhanced spatial quality and user experience. Through this process, I learned how passive strategies can significantly reduce energy demand while improving indoor comfort. I also gained a deeper understanding of how to adapt design solutions to different climates, how site analysis directly informs sustainable strategies, and how architectural decisions impact environmental performance.

ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION

Project 1 (Groupwork)

For this project, we designed a 2,500m² dine-in restaurant in Putrajaya through a collaborative process with QS students. This project required us to develop schematic designs, façade systems, structural details, and a BIM model while balancing creativity with cost-conscious considerations. Working with them has taught me the importance of clear communication and teamwork, as we had to integrate both design and financial perspectives. From this, I learned how to evaluate façade systems for performance, improve my schematic documentation and BIM skills, and understand the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in preparing for real-world architectural practice.

Project 2 (Individual)

For this project, I selected precast concrete as my chosen IBS typology, while my group members explored other systems such as steel framing and timber. I studied real-life building examples in Malaysia that applied precast concrete and analyzed its construction time, cost savings, labour requirements, material efficiency, and sustainability. I also used the CIDB IBS Scoring System to evaluate its level of industrialization and efficiency. From this, I learned that precast concrete offers faster construction, reduced site labour, consistent quality, and strong potential for sustainable practices in Malaysia.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Project 1 (Groupwork)

For this project, we studied Perth and Brisbane to explore sustainable urban systems and flood resilience. We analyzed Perth’s urban design, density, and resource efficiency, then compared it with Brisbane’s stronger resilience strategies and community-based planning. We also studied and compared their green, blue, red, and grey infrastructure, and proposed improvements for each city by learning from the other. This evaluation showed me how urban frameworks adapt to context and why achieving SDG 11 requires balancing environmental, social, and economic priorities.
